“Russia uses the dependencies in which the West found itself. In particular, this is energy dependence. the Russian Federation will blackmail and bet on it. After all, when Western societies feel economic problems, and they will definitely feel them already this winter, because there is a shortage of gas, sentiments against the authorities and the intended political course may begin within European countries. Russia can bet on this and demand concessions and compromises, that the war must be ended at the expense of Ukraine. Because if the supply of gas via Nord Stream-1 is completely stopped, and there is such a risk, Europe will not be able to solve the problem of alternative energy carriers in the short term,” Yakhno said.

Currently, Europe is actively rebuilding and looking for other sources of energy supply. According to the political scientist, this is a supply from Norway, Azerbaijan, as well as from African countries, where the search for new deposits is underway. In addition, the option of returning to coal and nuclear power plants is being considered. However, such a restructuring can be carried out in the long term, and it is not so easy to replace Russian gas now.
“Russia wants to create problems by combining different types of blackmail. On the one hand, it is a war in Europe, on the other – threats of nuclear weapons, and on the third – the use of economic factors. It is quite possible that they purposefully combine all these factors in order to squeeze Europe. But I think that it will fail, because the West, in my opinion, has made up its mind. This was shown by the NATO summit, the EU summit, and the G7 summit. Globally and strategically, this determination consists in getting rid of dependence on Russia and minimizing any contacts with it. However, this is not yet possible, and contacts continue. Although everyone understands that the money that Russia receives from energy carriers, in particular, is spent on continuing the war,” the political scientist added.
