Johnson, who was forced to announce his resignation earlier this month amid a rebellion in his Conservative Party over a series of scandals, has been a staunch supporter of Ukraine since Russia invaded in February. He went to the capital Kyiv twice to meet with Zelenskyi.
Truss, who as foreign minister oversaw the imposition of sanctions against those closest to the Russian president, said she would work with allies to provide Ukraine with more weapons and humanitarian aid.

“As Prime Minister, I will be Ukraine’s greatest friend — following in the footsteps of Boris Johnson — and will be fully committed to ensuring that Putin is defeated in Ukraine and strategically defeated, and that Russia is contained in the future,” she said in a statement.
Truss is leading the polls among Conservative Party members who will ultimately decide who will be Britain’s next prime minister after weeks of voting on September 5.
