“The Secretary-General warmly welcomes the departure of the Razoni, the first merchant vessel to leave the Ukrainian port of Odesa since February 26, 2022. The vessel with a cargo of 26,527 tons of corn is headed to the port of Tripoli, Lebanon, and is the first vessel under the Black Sea Grain Initiative signed in Istanbul on July 22. Ensuring the possibility of transporting existing grain and food products to world markets is a humanitarian necessity,” the statement said.
Details
As noted, the first shipment is the collective agreement of the Joint Coordination Center (JCC), created in Istanbul under the auspices of the United Nations (UN), which includes representatives of Ukraine, the Russian Federation and Turkey.
“Since its establishment, the Parties, with the support of the United Nations, have worked tirelessly to implement the agreements reached under this initiative. The Secretary-General applauds their efforts and thanks Turkey for its leadership. The Secretary-General is pleased that, thanks to the persistent efforts, overall leadership and coordination of the SCC, the ship left safely Odesa port,” the statement said.
The Secretary-General hopes that this is only the first of many merchant ships under the signature initiative and that it will provide much-needed stability and contribute to food security in the world, especially in the most humanitarianly vulnerable regions.
Addition
Ukraine, the United Nations, Turkey and Russia signed an agreement on July 22 (Ukraine and the Russian Federation separately) aimed at ensuring the safe exit of ships from three Ukrainian ports (Odesa, Chornomorsk, Yuzhny), which were blocked by Russia after its full-scale invasion on February 24 . Ukraine and Russia are major exporters of grain, and the port blockade has delayed tens of millions of tons of grain in the country.
Minister of Infrastructure Oleksandr Kubrakov announced that on August 1, the first ship with Ukrainian grain left the Odesa port.
