“They could give up Crimea. They could do something with NATO: ‘OK, we’re not going to join NATO,’ and you’d have a country. I think Putin wanted to make a deal,” Trump said.
“And now I don’t think that he (Putin – ed.) wants to conclude an agreement. I think that it is much more difficult to conclude an agreement. He is bombing everything there (in Ukraine – ed.). Well, that is, he will seize everything there. And extremely , it is extremely sad to see what is happening to Ukraine. Very, very sad,” he said.
In addition, Trump called Putin’s deployment of troops and equipment to the borders of Ukraine before the invasion “an excellent negotiating tactic.”
“And when you look at these completely burned buildings, all these people are dead. You’ve lost a lot of people. This is a deal that could have been negotiated. And he threw 200,000 troops to the border to negotiate, and he couldn’t get a deal — and now I not sure you can make a deal so easily,” he said.
