Schroeder “recommended” the federal government to solve acute gas issues in Germany through the use of the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline. That is where he has a position.
“The simplest solution would be to put the Nord Stream-2 gas pipeline into operation,” he said.
Asked about the federal government’s unequivocally ruling out its launch after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, Schroeder said: “If you don’t want to use Nord Stream 2, you’re going to have consequences. And they’re going to be huge in Germany as well.”
Schroeder made a number of other statements in interviews with Stern and RTL/ntv. In particular, with regard to NATO membership, Schroeder said that it was a “wise decision” by then-Chancellor Angela Merkel and her Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier in 2008 to prevent Ukraine from joining. And that the Kremlin “wants a negotiated solution.”

German ex-chancellor Schroeder visited the Russian Federation at the end of July.
