“I invite Serbian President Vucic and Kosovo Prime Minister Kurti to Brussels on August 18 to discuss ways forward between Pristina and Belgrade,” Borrell tweeted on August 6.
Context
Tensions flared between Kosovo and Serbia after Pristina retaliated by saying all Serbian cars entering Kosovo must have temporary Kosovo plates from August 1, and those entering with a Serbian passport must fill in additional documents. The decision led to protests and blockades on the part of the Serbs and even shots fired on the Kosovo side.
Following consultations, the Kosovo government has delayed implementation of a decision that would have required ethnic Serbs, who make up the majority in the north, to apply for documents and car number plates issued by Kosovo authorities until September 1.
Kosovo police said that the demolition of barricades in the north of the country allowed the reopening of two crossing points with Serbia.
But the lack of a complete resolution of the situation means that on September 1, a similar situation may arise again.
