In the Sejm of Lithuania, three conservatives drafted amendments to the citizenship law so that Lithuanian citizenship granted as an exception could be revoked due to the support of the aggressors.
Details
The draft amendments to the law provide that a citizen of another state who has received Lithuanian citizenship as an exception loses his Lithuanian passport if his actions threaten the security and interests of the Lithuanian state and if they support a state that threatens the security of Lithuania and other countries.
The changes, according to the authors, were initiated “taking into account the current situation of the Russian war in Ukraine and the threat to Lithuania, as well as the entire region.”
In their opinion, the current legal norm, which determines the grounds for the loss of citizenship, does not correspond to the geopolitical situation.
According to the publication, the need to amend the law on citizenship was discussed when skater Margarita Drobyazko, who received Lithuanian citizenship as an exception, with her husband Povilas Vanagas took part in a show program organized by the wife of the press secretary of the Russian president Tatyana Navka.
