“The fighting near the nuclear plant is dangerous and irresponsible, and we continue to call on Russia to cease all military operations on or near Ukrainian nuclear facilities and return full control to Ukraine. We also support Ukraine’s calls for the creation of a demilitarized zone around the nuclear power plant,” the US State Department said.

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres called for international inspectors to be granted access to the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant after enemy shelling of Europe’s largest nuclear power plant last weekend.
Context
On August 5, the invaders, using rocket and artillery weapons, shelled the territory of the nuclear power facility located in the temporarily occupied Energodar. The nitrogen-oxygen station and the combined auxiliary building of the Zaporizhzhya NPP were damaged.
The Washington-based think tank Institute for the Study of War (ISW) assessed on August 3 that Russian forces likely used the power plant to “play on Western fears of a nuclear disaster in Ukraine in order to reduce the West’s will to provide military support for a Ukrainian counteroffensive.”
ISW also stated that Russia “effectively uses the station as a nuclear shield to prevent Ukrainian strikes on Russian forces and equipment.”
