Hungary has announced that it is increasing gas imports from Russia through the Turkstream pipeline, which transports blue fuel to Hungary through Bulgaria and Serbia. Russian energy giant Gazprom will add 2.6 million cubic meters of gas per day to previously agreed supplies, said Tamash Menzer, state secretary of the country’s Foreign Ministry.

“Because of the war going on in the neighborhood and the response to it with sanctions, Europe is facing a serious energy crisis. Despite the rapid rise in the price of natural gas, the question today is not the price of gas, but whether it will be enough for the winter season. The duty of the Hungarian government is to ensure a safe gas supply for the country, and we are fulfilling this,” Menzer said.

Hungary is about 85% dependent on Russian gas and strongly opposes the idea of any EU sanctions on imports of blue fuel from Russia. Prime Minister Viktor Orbán also insists that imports of Russian crude oil should be exempted from EU sanctions.
Menzer added that Gazprom will increase supplies through the Turkstream pipeline by 2.6 million cubic meters of gas per day than previously planned, according to trade agreements. In addition, negotiations on September deliveries are underway.
