Since Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, the number of citizens who speak Ukrainian at home has been growing. This is evidenced by the survey data of the sociological group “Rating” .

“The number of those who speak Ukrainian more often at home continues to grow. Thus, today 51% indicated that they speak Ukrainian at home (in April 2022 – 48%), a third – in two languages, 13% – Russian. More than half of the inhabitants of the south and east are bilingual, about a quarter are Russian-speaking. The use of Russian in everyday life has decreased by about half,” the message says.

76% of respondents consider Ukrainian their native language, 19% – Russian. At the same time, 30% of Russian speakers named Ukrainian as their native language.
86% believe that Ukrainian language should be the only state language. 10% support the status of Russian as the official one in some regions, only 3% support Russian as the second state language in Ukraine.
More than half of the respondents before the war constantly spoke Ukrainian, a quarter – sometimes, every fifth – rarely or never. Over the past six months, the number of those who began to constantly communicate in Ukrainian has increased to 64%. Sometimes 24% speak Ukrainian, rarely or never – 12%. More often began to use Ukrainian residents of the South and East, immigrants. Since the beginning of the war, 19% of Ukrainians have switched to permanent or more frequent use of the Ukrainian language. In general, since the beginning of the war, 41% of Russian-speaking and bilinguals began to speak Ukrainian more often, of which 24% – constantly, 17% – more often.

A nationwide survey was conducted on August 17-18, 2022 among the population of Ukraine aged 18 and over in all regions, except for the temporarily occupied territories of Crimea and Donbas, as well as territories where there was no Ukrainian mobile connection at the time of the survey.
A total of 1000 respondents were interviewed. Survey method: CATI (Computer Assisted Telephone Interviewing) based on a random sample of mobile phone numbers. The margin of error with a confidence level of 0.95 does not exceed 3.1%.
