The Minister of Energy of Ukraine Herman Galushchenko emphasized during the telethon that the shutdown of the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant will not reduce the potential nuclear threat .

“If the plant (ZAES – ed.) is not working and does not produce electricity, but there is nuclear material on it, and this is obvious, it is in the active zone and in the holding pools and in the spent nuclear fuel storage. So while there is nuclear material there , there is a nuclear danger,” Galushchenko said.
The minister also added that whether or not the plant supplies power to the grid does not really affect nuclear safety issues.
Grossi said he had completed his first visit to the Zaporizhzhia NPP and added that the IAEA would maintain a permanent presence there.
