According to a joint proposal by Poland, Ireland and the three Baltic states, Gazprombank, which is used to make gas payments between Russia and the EU, should be excluded from the SWIFT system within the next round of EU sanctions, Euronews reports with reference to the relevant document .
Details
“Five countries want Gazprombank permanently excluded from SWIFT, the highly secure system that allows financial transactions. The Moscow-based bank acts as an intermediary between EU customers and Gazprom, the Russian gas monopoly, and allows the conversion of euros into rubles,” the message says.
Since some Eastern and Central European countries are still heavily dependent on Russian gas pipelines, Gazprombank has not yet been blacklisted by SWIFT.
At the same time, as noted by the head of OP Andriy Yermak in Telegram, it is reported that the EU is discussing the disconnection from SWIFT of a total of four more Russian banks: Gazprombank, Alfa-Bank, Rosbank and Tinkoff Bank.
At the same time, the document with the proposals of the five EU countries, as indicated, also proposes other sanctions, in particular, regarding insurance services, diamonds from the Russian Federation, a long list of goods and services, the trade of which should be either prohibited or severely restricted, for example, exports EU-made smartphones, cameras, projectors, lasers, radio equipment, lenses and prisms, as well as computer software, hardware maintenance, web hosting services and cyber security systems.
Addition
It is expected that the eighth package of sanctions may be approved at the meeting of EU leaders in Prague on October 6-7.
