The mayor of the Metropolitan District of Colombia, Muriel Bowser, decided on Wednesday evening to extend the state of emergency for 15 days (until January 21).
“Today’s events and well-founded fears of an ongoing emergency pose a threat to public safety and well-being of the district’s residents. Accordingly, this emergency order (regime) is extended for 15 days until the next mayor’s order,” the text reads. These measures were agreed with local internal security units and emergency agencies.
The decree provides for the need to use assistance at the federal level.
The order will run until 15:00 on January 21 (22:00 Kyiv time), ie it will affect the inauguration ceremony of US President-elect Joseph Biden on January 20.
The curfew began in the US capital at 1:00 Kyiv time. It is reported that some of the protesters left the stairs of the US Congress building. Earlier, it became known that members of the US FBI special forces entered the Congress building on Wednesday, where dozens of protesters broke into earlier.
Supporters of US President Donald Trump tried to storm the US Congress building. Some Trump supporters have previously stormed the congressional building in Washington, D.C., where the voting process was approved, which announced on December 14 the victory of Democrat Joseph Biden in the US presidential election.
Prior to the meeting, the incumbent addressed the White House in front of participants in the March for the Salvation of America, a rally of many thousands in his support, during which he stated that he did not admit defeat in the election. After the action, many participants went to the Congress building. Numerous injuries and shots are currently known.
Trump called for protests in Washington for peace. In turn, the US vice president said that the protesters would be responsible for the seizure of Congress. Later, in a video address to his supporters, Trump urged protesters to go home.
In particular, Biden said the seizure of government buildings in Washington was not a protest but a revolt.
According to Reuters, while Republicans seized Congress, Democrats took control of the US Senate as a result of the election.
The presidential election took place in the United States on November 3. However, the vote count was delayed due to record mail voting and high turnout. As a result, voters nominated Biden as the new president. His inauguration is scheduled for January 20.
