According to the results of the presidential elections in Kazakhstan, the current head of state, Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, received 81.31% of the vote. More than 6.5 million citizens of the country voted for him, said the chairman of the Central Election Commission Nurlan Abdirov .

On September 1, Tokayev proposed to hold early elections of the head of state in the fall of 2022 and announced an amnesty for participants in the January protests. He also proposed limiting his tenure as president to one seven-year term.

“For me, the interests of the state are paramount. Therefore, I am ready to shorten my term of office and go to the early presidential elections,” Tokayev said.
On January 2, mass protests began in Kazakhstan due to rising fuel prices, which later turned into riots and armed clashes with security forces. On January 5, Tokayev announced that he was taking over the post of chairman of the Security Council of Kazakhstan, which was previously held by Nursultan Nazarbayev.
According to official data, 225 people were killed in the January events in Kazakhstan, most of them civilians. In total, as a result of mass protests, 13.5 thousand inhabitants were detained.
