US Secretary of the Army Ryan McCarthy stated that the US National Guard will build a 3-meter non-scalable fence around the Capitol that will stand for at least 30 days.
During a joint news conference with Washington Mayor Muriel Bowser, a Pentagon official said the day ahead would be a “terrible and shameful day” in US history. He said the Pentagon had provided the necessary resources in response to a request from the mayor of the US capital.
McCarthy said government officials had no idea there was a possibility of a breakthrough into the Capitol.
According to a Pentagon official, there are currently 850 National Guard soldiers in the Capitol, and by the weekend the number of US National Guardsmen in Washington will reach 6,500.
