The grandson of the last emperor of Austria-Hungary Charles I, President of the “Pan-European Movement of Austria” Carl von Habsburg during an online conference on the occasion of his 60th birthday stated that the European Union must transform its European Neighborhood Policy towards Ukraine into a concrete policy that will envisage the prospect of EU membership.
“I am also in favor of updating the neighborhood policy towards Ukraine to a specific policy with the prospect of accession,” said the head of the Habsburg House.
He stressed the importance of the accession to the EU of the six countries of the South-Eastern Balkans, which is in the European security interests and will not allow the influence of other countries to increase, including Russia. At the same time, as von Habsburg emphasized, attention must be paid to Eastern Europe, whose countries also see their future in Europe.

“We also have to look to the East, where a state like Ukraine, with its Euromaidan or the so-called Revolution of Dignity, has made it clear that its citizens see their future in Europe, not under Russian domination,” he said.
According to him, countries in Eastern Europe still have problems, such as non-compliance with the rule of law and corruption, but these are European countries.
“Anyone who takes European unification seriously must make sure that every European country can join the European Union,” von Habsburg said.
He also pointed to the weakening of European countries in the international arena, which manifested itself “during the wars in the Balkans after the breakup of Yugoslavia, as well as Russia’s aggression against Ukraine.” In this context, von Habsburg stressed the importance of the EU developing a common foreign policy.
