The Bucharest branch of the Union of Ukrainians of Romania (SUR) held a cultural event “Concert of Ukrainian carols” on January 9-10, aimed at preserving, continuing and promoting the Christmas traditions and customs of Ukrainians in Romania.
A special guest was the performer of Ukrainian and Romanian folk songs Vasyl Boychuk-Rognyanu, a native of the village of Verkhnya Rivne, Maramures County. He performed beautiful Ukrainian carols and told about the winter customs of Ukrainians, such as: caroling, nativity scenes, parties.
Boychuk-Rognyan, who is an ardent lover of folklore and one of the promoters of the traditions of Maramures Ukrainians for over 35 years, also presented some elements of Ukrainian folk costume, which he brought from the Maramures region.
Father Deacon of the Bucharest Ukrainian Orthodox Church Volodymyr Malkovych performed three Dobrudzha carols. He told about the Christmas customs of Ukrainians in Dobrogea.
The concert also included carols performed by students Nadezhda and Mykolayko Panchekiv, instrumental duo Natalia Panchek-Kolotylo (violin) and Dan Vasilescu (guitar). Carols, in particular from Bukovina, were performed by members of the Bucharest branch Zenovia Mandyuk, Bohdan Kostyuk, Olga and Mykola Belovelsky and Violeta Tsigenescu.

The head of the Bucharest branch of the SUR, writer Mykhailo Traista, also read a carol. He reminded that Ukrainians live in Bucharest – natives of different regions of the country: Maramures, Bukovina, Dobrudja, Banat. They have preserved their traditions and customs, especially the carols with which they grew up and which they pass on to future generations.
The concert of Ukrainian carols continued on Sunday in the Bucharest Ukrainian Orthodox Church of St. Peter’s Tomb, which celebrated its temple holiday. The service was conducted by the parish priest Dmytro Kolotylo, the priest Jinel Aurelian Ivan and the father-deacon Volodymyr Malkovych.
In his speech, Father Dmytro Kolotylo noted the significant role of Metropolitan Petro Mohyla in the church, cultural, educational fields and book printing.
Representatives of the Embassy of Ukraine in Romania were present at the celebration.
The concert of Ukrainian carols ended in the premises of the Bucharest branch of SUR, where Ukrainian and Romanian carols performed by Vasyl Boychuk-Rognyan, Dan Vasilescu and Nick Nikushor were played again.
