Models of the premium brand will get more advanced power plants.
Nissan has registered the I-Power trademark with the US Patent Office, which, among other things, can be used to designate electric powertrain for ground vehicles.
Nissan currently has a system called e-Power: a sequential-type gasoline-electric propulsion system in which the wheels are driven by an electric motor and the internal combustion engine is used only to generate energy. In Japan, such hybrid versions are offered for the Note, Serena, and Kicks, and soon the Europeans will get acquainted with the system when the new generation of Qashqai is released.
American journalists reasonably suggested that I-Power is an analogue of the same technology, designed for cars of the Infiniti brand. Recall that in the summer of last year, the premium division of the Japanese automaker presented a new development strategy. Then the company announced that it will fully switch to the platforms of the parent brand and will use its hybrid systems, modified to increase power and reduce noise.
Whether Infiniti’s plug-in hybrid will actually be called I-Power and which models will get it first we don’t know for sure, but one of the likely candidates is a new three-row SUV based on the QX60 Monograph concept that debutedlast fall.
