There are few drivers who are completely satisfied with their car. Most cars “lack” power and torque. However, not everyone knows that absolutely any car can add horsepower.
There are many simple but effective ways to do this without compromising your wallet.
1. Air filter
For normal engine operation, the incoming air must be clean, dry and preferably cold. The first two requirements are met by the air filter. This is a very responsible element, as it must effectively retain all debris and not create much resistance. Unfortunately, you have to sacrifice something, because either the power of the motor is reduced, or it wears out faster. For those who want to increase the car’s power cheaply, it is advisable to install an increased bandwidth filter. Also on sports cars often put so-called filters of zero resistance. However, it is worth noting that they pass a lot of harmful dust, and retain only the leaves and insects.
2. Air intake
On many older cars, the air intake is organized directly from under the hood. This is useful in winter, but in summer it leads to overheating and power drops.
Therefore, it would be rational to attach a corrugated pipe to the inlet of the air filter, which will take air in front of the car, in front of the radiator, or next to it.
3. Exhaust catalyst
In order to take care of the environment, automakers are sometimes forced to “choke” the car engine. Thus, in the exhaust system of all modern engines, a catalytic converter is installed at the plant. It is a chemical filter through which the flow of exhaust gases passes. At the same time the gas flow is slowed down, and the car’s power drops. Eventually, the catalyst clogs with soot, and the engine runs even worse.
The method of solving the problem has been known for a long time. The catalyst housing is cut with a Bulgarian and the cells of the filter material are hollowed out. Or you can remove the catalyst completely by boiling a flame arrester instead.
4. EGR valve
Another way to reduce harmful emissions from a car is with an exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) system. The principle of its operation is that part of the exhaust gases through the controlled valve enters the intake. This degrades the filling in the cylinders and the engine power drops.
Without the installation of the EGR system, the automaker cannot achieve the required environmental standards. But most drivers care about the planet only to their detriment. Subsequently, the channels in the valve are clogged with soot, problems with the engine begin. The easiest way to increase power and get rid of problems is to shut off the EGR valve with a metal plate.
5. Chip tuning
When modern fuel injection systems prevailed over the carburetor, an electronic control unit appeared under the hood of each car. This complex device processes signals from sensors, and on its basis controls the operation of the engine. This is done according to a certain program, which is called “firmware”. The factory firmware provides a balance between power, economy and low emissions.
For a modest fee, some car craftsmen can reflash the control unit. This changes important parameters, such as ignition advance and the composition of the working mixture. So, with the help of a computer you can make the car more dynamic. Having a concept of the car and access to the Internet, you can even do chip tuning yourself.
6. High-octane gasoline
Most modern injector cars run on A-95 gasoline, and old carburetor cars run on A-92 gasoline. The numbers on the label indicate the octane number of the fuel, and if we summarize, the higher it is, the better the engine will run.
To increase the car’s power, you can fork out for better quality gasoline. This not only improves the dynamics, but the engine itself runs softer. However, it is not necessary to fill in 98th gasoline in “Zhiguli” of 70 – 80th years. This can end up with burnt out valves, as for cars of those years it will be a very serious boost.
