Eating one onion a day will benefit your body. Moreover, you can eat onions in any form – both raw and cooked.
This opinion is shared by nutritionist Svetlana Fus. On her Instagram page, she wrote that onions are an excellent means of preventing many diseases.
The nutritionist said onions are used for colds to relieve sore throat. In addition, onions help to reduce blood cholesterol levels and prevent atherosclerosis. And also increases appetite, promotes the production of digestive juices and bile, and stimulates the intestines. Thus, onions have anti-inflammatory, antioxidant effects, strengthens capillaries and enhances immunity.
At the same time, Svetlana notes that raw onions are not recommended for people with gastrointestinal diseases (gastritis, stomach ulcers), as this can irritate the mucous membrane.
“A side effect of eating onions is unpleasant skin and breath odor, but if consumed in moderation shouldn’t be a big problem, and the health benefits are quite tangible,” says Svetlana.

Quercetin. A substance from the flavonoid family with strong antioxidant properties and anti-inflammatory effects. ⠀
Anthocyanins. A subset of flavonoids (antioxidants) that give certain types of onions their purple or red color. The more flavonoids, the brighter and darker the color of the bulb. Therefore, regular yellow onions are good, but purple is even better.
Organic sulfur compounds such as allicin. It is he who gives a pungent smell and taste, has an antibacterial and antifungal effect.
Fructans. Polymers of fructose, which are not digested by our enzymes and become a breeding ground for beneficial intestinal microflora (especially bifidobacteria and lactobacilli).
Saponins. Vegetable glycosides. They have anti-blocking properties and lower cholesterol. These substances make onions an important medicinal plant.
