For patients with atrial fibrillation (AF), low to moderate alcohol consumption is not associated with an increased risk of stroke or other cardiovascular events.
As part of the work, data from two comparable prospective cohort studies were combined, in which 3.8 thousand AF patients (mean age 71 ± 10 years) were observed for three years. The patients were grouped according to their daily alcohol intake.
Researchers have identified 136 confirmed strokes. The adjusted hazard ratios for the primary outcome (stroke and systemic embolism combination) were 0.87 for less or 1 drink per day, 0.70 for 1–2 drinks per day; and 0.96 for more than 2 drinks per day compared to those who did not drink at all.
No significant association was observed between alcohol consumption and bleeding, whereas a non-linear relationship was present for heart failure and myocardial infarction.
“Our results do not support specific guidelines for patients with AF regarding alcohol use,” the authors write.
