The Black Lives Matter movement was nominated for the 2021 Nobel Peace Prize.
The nomination was initiated by Norwegian MP Petter Eide. In justifying the nomination, he pointed out that the movement forced countries outside the United States to fight racism in their own societies.
“I believe that one of the key problems we face in America, but also in Europe and Asia, is the growing conflict based on inequality,” Eide said.
Black Lives Matter, in his opinion, has become a very important global movement in the fight against racial injustice.
Eide, who had previously nominated human rights activists from Russia and China, said another thing that impressed him about the Black Lives Matter movement was that “they were able to mobilize people from all walks of life” and thus differed from previous movements.
The Black Lives Matter movement was founded in 2013 in response to the acquittal in the United States of the man who shot Trayvon Martin. He gained wider recognition in 2014 after protests over the deaths of Michael Brown and Eric Garner. The movement became the source of a series of large-scale protests in 2020 after the deaths of George Floyd and Breona Taylor.
