Canadian Foreign Minister Mark Garno stated that the Government of Canada will provide 2.25 million Canadian dollars (1.76 million US dollars) to support civil society in Belarus.
“Canada will provide $ 2.25 million to support civil society organizations working to promote democracy in Belarus,” the document said.
The Foreign Ministry noted that the allocated funds “will help strengthen the diversity, resilience, and efficiency of the Belarusian civil society, which defends its rights and civil liberties.” These funds, in particular, will go to support independent media.
Following the presidential election in Belarus on August 9 last year, mass protests are taking place in the country every week. Alexander Lukashenko won the election with 80.1% of the vote, followed by Svitlana Tikhanovska with 10.12%, who did not recognize the results.
Authorities in Canada backed the protesters and, along with Britain, twice imposed sanctions on Lukashenko and other Belarusian officials.
