The number of Ukrainians is decreasing. There are two reasons – the decline in the population due to low fertility and short life expectancy, said a leading researcher at the Institute of Demography and Social Research.
“Our main problem since Soviet times is a short life expectancy, and there is no stable growth dynamics. Many people die even at working age, especially men, so there is a big difference between the number of women and men,” Tkachenko said.
She also stressed that the state of society in the country affects, first of all, the demography.
According to the expert, citizens of Ukraine should learn to treat each other better.
“The mood itself needs to be changed in order for people to feel calmer and more confident. For better fertility, you need confidence in the future, no matter how trite it may sound,” Lydia Tkachenko stressed.
The expert added that the demographic situation in Ukraine does not differ much from the situations not only in the Russian Federation, Belarus, and Moldova but also in the Baltic countries.
According to the State Statistics Service, over the past year, Ukrainians have decreased by 300 thousand people. As of December 1, 2020, the population in Ukraine was 41 million 630 thousand people.
