In this remote location known as “Purple Island”, buildings have been changed to purple, and so are the ceilings and walls of apartment buildings, old telephone booths and the bridge leading to Bakji Island are all purple.
The project was planned in 2015 when the province planned to “create attractive island destinations”
About 150 people live on the islands of Banwal and Pakshi, and most of them work in agriculture.
The islanders and management have come to the conclusion that more tourists could be attracted to the islands, and there would be more opportunities for locals to participate in the tourism sector.
To promote “purple tourism”, plants with identical flowers have also been planted. About 30,000-star flowers have been planted on the islands.
This wildflower is also distinguished by its identical shades of purple. More than 230,000 square feet of lavender fields have also been created.”
Purple restaurants, cafes, a hotel, and a bike rental shop also appeared on every island.
“It worked, especially for domestic tourism during the pandemic,” officials say.
The “purple” island has become a site that local tourists go easily, as they do not face quarantine restrictions.
The island is about six hours away by bus or car from Seoul.
According to reports, from June to August of last year, more than 100,000 people visited the island, which is 20% more than in 2018.
