Only recently have researchers of Charles Dickens’s work and biography stumbled upon a strange letter dated 1856. Surprisingly, the meaning of the message is very reminiscent of a modern pandemic. So much so that mystics began to think about the prophetic abilities of the writer and some secret message.

“Medical opinions are divided, and it is very difficult to get an accurate picture of what is happening. Authorities are trying to avoid panic, travel has stopped, and everywhere a lot of fake news,” – said Dickens in the text.
However, over time, everything fell into place. The letter was written for a doctor at the British Embassy in France and a good friend of the writer Joseph Oliff. And the mysterious disease he describes is diphtheria.
In the text, the author of numerous books expresses concern, because diphtheria, a disease in the XIX century, is dangerous and almost not studied by man, played out in Boulogne. That’s where he, like many other aristocrats, loved to go on vacation.
Dickens closely followed all the news about the region. He, like current researchers, was skeptical of official data. Most likely, the authorities underestimated the real number of patients and the death rate.
