More than 100 photo traps set up in the exclusion zone recorded the presence of a lynx, a very cautious and rare predator that once left the area due to human activity.
Kyiv. Ukraine. Ukraine Gate – May 2, 2021 – Reports
As part of the international environmental project “Polissya – Wildlife Without Borders”, the staff of the Chornobyl Reserve, together with experts from the Frankfurt Zoological Society and the Ukrainian Society for the Protection of Birds, conducted photo monitoring of this Red Book animal.
The study covered about 40% of the reserve. The presence of lynx was recorded throughout the territory covered by photo monitoring. According to scientists, the collected data will allow to development of a strategy for effective conservation of the Eurasian line in the Chernobyl Reserve and in Polissya in general.
In the past, this beautiful predator was a common animal for Polissya, but due to deforestation, active economic activity, and poaching, it has become very rare. In Ukraine, the lynx is found in the Carpathians and Polissya.
“The purpose of the project is to identify areas that are extremely important for the conservation and expansion of the population of this large predator within the reserve, as well as to estimate the approximate number of the species, its spatial distribution, and biotope distribution, ” said the scientists.
Earlier, the Frankfurt Zoological Society posted on its YouTube channel a video of photos of “elusive” animals caught in photo traps set in the exclusion zone last year.
