For example, residents in areas near the village of Tomahawk in Parkland County, about 100 km west of the capital, were ordered to leave their homes.
A mandatory evacuation was ordered in some parts of the district on Thursday evening. The evacuation zone expanded overnight due to strong winds.
In a statement issued shortly after 9 a.m. Friday, Parkland County authorities said the fire was expected to be contained by night due to projected rain, and the Canadian Ministry of the Environment said 15 millimeters of rain was expected in the region overnight.
The district said the fire engulfed at least 1,000 hectares of forest.
Parkland County Fire Chief Brian Cornforth, meanwhile, said that while rain could help, the forecast could be unpredictable.
Even if the rain forecast comes true, Cornfort expects the fire to smolder for weeks.
It should be noted that according to Globalnews, as of Friday evening, May 7, the forest fire spread to more than 2,000 hectares in one night, although firefighters managed to stop the spread of flames.
