“This is partly because we remain committed to open channels of communication with the Russian government both to advance US interests and to reduce the risk of miscalculations between our two countries,” Price said.
Russian Ambassador Anatoly Antonov returned to the United States on June 20. He told the Russian media that he was optimistic and wanted to help build “equal and pragmatic” relations.
Russia’s ambassador to the United States, Anatoly Antonov, was recalled by the Kremlin in March after Biden called Putin a “murderer. ” US Ambassador to Russia John Sullivan left Moscow in April, publicly stating that the reason for his return to the United States was “consultations” with US officials.
His departure from Russia came after the United States imposed sanctions on Russia and expelled 10 Russian diplomats, and Russia, in turn, expelled 10 American diplomats.
“We have agreed that the two ambassadors must return to their posts and take up their duties,” Putin told a news conference Wednesday after the summit.
“It’s a technical question of when exactly this will happen – tomorrow, the day after tomorrow, or something like that.”
Biden and Putin ended their summit, which Putin called “constructive”, on Wednesday earlier than expected, after about four hours with breaks. Biden held his press conference after Putin’s press conference.
