It will be difficult to find a summer resident who in his agricultural career would never have faced such a problem as yellowed onions. Needless to say, as soon as the greens begin to wither, you can no longer cut it and serve it to the table. And most importantly, such onions are unlikely to last until the harvest season. What is the reason for such “behavior” and how can the problem be solved without undue difficulty?

Onions turn yellow and wither in the vast majority of cases for the same reason: lack of nutrients. First of all, it is a question of such minerals as nitrogen. Therefore, in order to bring the crop back to life and allow it to grow large and strong, you need to make the right and timely fertilization. Most often, green shoots begin to turn yellow when the onion was not fed enough or not fed at the stage of planting.
Ordinary ammonium nitrate will help to solve the problem. Getting this fertilizer for most gardeners should not be difficult. It is ammonium nitrate that contains a large amount of nitrogen, which is so urgently needed not only by onions but also by many other cultivated plants in the garden and vegetable garden. Usually, saltpeter feeding is carried out in late May and June. However, before you grab the package, it should be remembered that fertilizer can poison the crop.
Use ammonium nitrate very carefully, as it can easily cause burns to roots and leaves. Proper dosing and correct application technology are important. It is best to dilute nitrogen fertilizer in water – for 10 liters of water take 20 grams of ammonium nitrate. To feed onions, the best way is to create small shallow furrows along the beds. That’s where we pour the prepared solution. This will avoid damage to crops and at the same time help to enrich the soil in the beds with minerals.
