Cameco has reported a forest fire near the Cigar Lake uranium mine in northern Saskatchewan, Canada. Natural fires in the country followed after the Canadian record of the highest air temperature was broken three times.
Kyiv. Ukraine. Ukraine Gate – July 2, 2021 – International News
The company said in a statement that it had evacuated about 230 workers from the mine, and about 80 people remained on-site to keep the plant safe.
The fire is complicated by extremely warm and dry weather due to the “thermal dome” that now hangs over Western Canada.
Production at the Cigar Lake mine has been temporarily suspended. Cameco said that if the threat of forest fires continues to grow, there is a plan to ensure the safety of workers and a number of precautions have been taken.
The Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission, which regulates the mine’s activities, wrote on Twitter that it is monitoring the situation and will provide updates as events unfold.
According to the Saskatchewan government, there are currently 19 ongoing fires. Five were not localized, including a fire in Brigge near Cigar Lake.
Unprecedented temperature records were set in Canada for three days in a row. So, in the city of Lytton (British Columbia) on Wednesday, June 30, the weather station registered 49.5 degrees Celsius.
The ensuing forest fire destroyed much of the small western Canadian town of Lytton and damaged a nearby hydroelectric plant.
Meteorologists attribute the weather anomaly to the effect of the so-called “thermal dome” caused by high atmospheric pressure.
Weather forecasters warn that high atmospheric pressure over British Columbia in Canada will continue to provide record temperatures this week – from 32 to 39 degrees Celsius.
The duration of this heatwave is a cause for concern, as the fever persists at night. This record temperature increases the likelihood of heat-related diseases and increases the risk of forest fires due to drought.
