The European Union has sent air aid to Cyprus to contain a large-scale forest fire raging north of the cities of Limassol and Larnaca.

The fire affected at least six communities in the foothills of the Troodos Mountains, an area of pine forest and dense shrubs. The European Commission has said firefighting planes have taken off from Greece to fight the blaze, and Italy also plans to deploy air assistance. Officials said help was also expected from Israel.
“This is the worst forest fire in the history of Cyprus,” Charalambous, director of the forestry department, told Alexandra.
Attempts were made to prevent the fire by crossing the mountains and stopping it before reaching Machairas, a pine forest and one of the highest peaks in Cyprus. Alexandru said the perimeter of the fire was “at least 40 kilometers.”
Dozens of real estate were affected. There were large-scale power outages in the area. The smoke was visible in the capital of Nicosia, which was at a distance of 75 km (45 miles).
“This is a very difficult day for Cyprus. All the mechanisms of the state are working, and the priority is the absence of human losses, ”Cypriot President Nikos Anastasiades wrote on Twitter.
The cause of the fire, which occurred around noon, was unclear. This week, Cyprus experienced heat above 40 degrees Celsius (104 degrees Fahrenheit).
