The Algerian Foreign Ministry recalled its ambassador to Morocco on Sunday and hinted at the possible follow-up to the latest outbreak of tensions between North Africa’s neighbors over the disputed territory of Western Sahara.

The move came amid comments by the Moroccan ambassador to the UN on the Algerian region of Kabila, the ministry said after the ambassador dragged the region into a centuries-old dispute over Western Sahara claimed by both Morocco and the Algerian-backed Polisario Front.
The Moroccan ambassador called for a meeting of the Non-Aligned Movement “for the right to self-determination of people living in the Kabila region,” citing the Algerian minority. He suggested that Algeria not deny this, supporting the self-determination of Western Sahara.
The Polisario Front is fighting for the independence of Western Sahara, a Spanish colony until the mid-1970s, which is now largely occupied and ruled by Morocco.
The leadership of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan has announced the recall of the ambassador and high-ranking diplomats from Pakistan after the abduction of the daughter of the Afghan ambassador Sils Alihil.
