Ukrainian polar explorers have registered record flocks of penguins: thousands of birds can be observed on different islands within a radius of 20 kilometers from the station, the press service of the National Antarctic Science Center writes.

Scientists believe migration is linked to climate change. When it’s summer in Ukraine, it’s winter in Antarctica. As local winters get warmer, areas of unfrozen water in the Wilhelm Archipelago area where the station is located can be found throughout the period. That is, penguins now stay very close to the station because of the more comfortable climate.
Also, large concentrations of penguins attract predators that hunt them – leopard seals and killer whales.
