Over the weekend, the water level in the rivers of Sichuan Province rose significantly after the rains. For example, the Dazhou Reservoir rose by 2.2 meters.
More than 440,000 people were affected by floods in six cities in the province.
In Sichuan, rains caused damage of 250 million yuan ($ 38.57 million). Forty-five houses were completely destroyed and 118 were severely damaged. More than 80,000 people from the province have already been evacuated.
Summer showers are common in China. However, local experts warn that it is necessary to increase the fortification of their cities and be prepared for the introduction of an emergency situation, as extreme weather conditions are becoming more frequent.
Also, according to meteorologists, the cause of floods in China was abnormal heat around the world. According to Chao Qingchen, deputy director of the National Climate Center, high temperatures and heavy rainfall are making China’s water resources more vulnerable. She also stressed that such weather conditions pose a great threat to the country’s economic development.
In July this year, most of Henan province in central China was flooded after heavy rains. Chinese media reported that this amount of precipitation occurs “once in a thousand years.”
On July 20, at least 12 people were killed in a subway in Zhengzhou when streams flooded subway tunnels and passenger cars.
Seven people were believed missing without a trace. Heavy rains and floods have affected 1.24 million people in Henan Province since July 16.
