Excessive daytime sleepiness, constant yawning, fatigue, irritability, and fatigue – these are the signs that you do not get enough sleep regularly. In the long run, chronic insomnia increases vulnerability to serious diseases, including cardiovascular disease, as well as diabetes. It can cause obesity and reduce life expectancy. If people do not have enough time to sleep at night, they are recommended a short nap. But researchers at the University of Michigan have shown that it will not help.
The journal Sleep published the results of a study that showed that short sleep lasting 30 to 60 minutes did not have a significant effect on cognitive impairment, which is associated with constant sleep deprivation. But the researchers found that the duration of the so-called long sleep, obtained during a nap, was still associated with a decrease in disorders due to lack of sleep in general. Long sleep is the most important stage of night rest when our bodies are most relaxed and heart rate and respiration are lowest.
When we go to bed every night, we first fall into a phase of long sleep, which takes up almost its entire duration. In the phase of short or fast sleep, we often have dreams. In the case of chronic insomnia, people especially need a long sleep, even during the day, according to the authors of the study.
