The research team led by Stella Talik from the University. Monasha analyzed already published studies on the effectiveness of hand washing, wearing masks and social distancing in the fight against COVID-19. In all, they found 72 such works, and in the course of a thorough examination, they had only eight studies left.
Six of them concerned the effectiveness of wearing masks. In total, 389.2 thousand people not infected with coronavirus and 2.6 thousand patients with COVID-19 took part in them. According to this study, wearing masks reduces the incidence by 53%. In addition, mortality from COVID-19 in countries where the wearing of masks was mandatory was lower by 45.7%.
Social distancing has also proved effective. After analyzing five studies, the researchers found that keeping the COVID-19 incidence at a distance was reduced by 25%. These data were based on the participation of 108.9 thousand healthy subjects and 2.7 thousand infected with coronavirus.
Hand washing also helps reduce coronavirus infection by 53%, but researchers note that the effectiveness study had significantly less coverage (292 people with coronavirus versus 10.3 thousand without it) than tests of wearing masks and social distance.
