Former Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili, who was imprisoned in Georgia, ended his hunger strike for 50 days after being transferred from a prison hospital to a military hospital.

According to Saakashvili’s doctor, the 53-year-old former president lost consciousness on Thursday. Doctors then called on the authorities to transfer him to a regular clinic, saying that his life was in danger.
Georgian authorities initially rejected medical recommendations, but Justice Minister Rati Bregadze said on Friday that they were ready to transfer Saakashvili to a military hospital “where his health and safety will be protected.”
Early Saturday morning, Saakashvili was transferred from a prison hospital to a military hospital in Gori, about 90 kilometers (55 miles) west of the capital, Tbilisi, his lawyer, Dito Sadzaglishvili, said.
Saakashvili’s personal doctor, Nokoloz Kipshidze, said former President Saakashvili had officially called off his hunger strike immediately after he was transferred to the Gori military hospital.
“He is still in a life-threatening condition and has been placed in the intensive care unit. Saakashvili’s re-feeding will begin on Saturday, “Kipshidze said.

At the initiative of Georgian Ombudsman Nino Lomjari, a group of doctors examined prisoner Saakashvili and inspected the prison hospital.
In conclusion, it was noted that due to prolonged starvation, Saakashvili developed seizures caused by Wernicke’s encephalopathy – a serious brain disease that can lead to coma. Doctors called on the Georgian authorities to immediately transfer the prisoner to a multidisciplinary high-tech hospital for brain research.
On November 18, the 49th day of the hunger strike, Saakashvili lost consciousness at the Gldan Prison Hospital, after which he was transferred to the intensive care unit. Doctors of the penitentiary institution managed to stabilize the condition of the former president of Georgia.
Former Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili was detained on October 1 in Tbilisi. He was reported to have crossed the border illegally.
The former Georgian leader went on a hunger strike in protest because he considers himself a political prisoner.
