US President Joe Biden is reportedly considering a possible boycott, and there is “an active debate in the British government as to whether Britain should follow his example.”
The option assumes the absence of British power at the Games, the country will be represented by the British Ambassador to China.
The boycott is actively supported by Foreign Minister Liz Trass, although some sources deny this, citing the fact that she did not make official statements in this regard.
“Trass is said to be personally shocked by Beijing’s persecution of Uighurs, including reports of forced sterilization and slave labor in Xinjiang, China’s northwestern autonomous region,” the newspaper said.
On November 16, it became known that the administration of US President Joe Biden intends to soon announce a diplomatic boycott of the upcoming 2022 Winter Olympics in Beijing.
According to these data, neither Biden himself nor any member of the US government will attend the Winter Olympics officially.
Discussions and negotiations on how to respond to the Olympic Games in the light of China’s recent allegations of human rights abuses have been going on for a long time.
In February, 180 human rights organizations and minorities living in China appealed to the world community to boycott the 2022 Winter Olympics.
“Any other decision will be in support of authoritarian rulers and open human rights violations by the Chinese Communist Party,” the letter said.
The International Olympic Committee (IOC) and its head, Thomas Bach, have so far rejected the idea of a boycott as “the wrong answer to these questions.” President of the German Olympic Sports Union (DOSB) Alphonse Herman strongly opposed such a boycott.
The IOC has faced controversy over a uniform contract with a Chinese factory advertising Xinjiang cotton. Uighurs are involved in the production of Xinjiang cotton on plantations.
Western countries accuse the Chinese authorities of human rights abuses, including forcibly sending Uighurs to cotton plantations, forcibly sterilizing them, and total surveillance. China denies the allegations.
