“I firmly believe that we will receive a positive response, we will receive support, the course has already been determined,” von der Leyen said on Sunday night in the ARD talk show.
“Of course, this is a historic decision that must now be made by the European Council, but the preparations are going well,” she said, adding: “I am sure.”

Von der Leyen stressed that the decision of the European Commission on the status of Ukraine’s candidate is based on data, facts and preparatory work that the country has done over the past eight years. “Ukraine has made a huge step forward in recent years,” she said. However, she said, “we want to see more reforms.”
Von der Leyen said that it was up to the applicant country whether the reception would be successful and how quickly. “All these countries are in control of how fast the process is going, and they need to carry out the necessary reforms, they need to show commitment to the European Union. Then the process will go faster, this is not a process that is completely tough,” she added.
Addition
On June 17, the European Commission called for the official nomination of Ukraine and Moldova as candidates for accession to the European Union. On Thursday and Friday, the 27 EU member states will discuss the recommendation in Brussels, as well as Georgia’s application for membership, which the European Commission said remains to be met. Member countries do not yet have a common position on this issue. The Austrian government, for example, wants Bosnia and Herzegovina to have candidate status. Romania wants to see Georgia on board.
