Nutritionist Svetlana Fuss offers to talk about holiday food on New Year’s Eve. About how to eat properly, feel good, enjoy food, so as not to change your wardrobe after the holidays.
Yes, this is the case when we eat at night or late in the evening, when we go to visit, where no one can look at the food. However, the tables are full of different dishes, because it is necessary to celebrate the holiday… where the main entertainment is sitting at the table and food, food, food..
Yes, during the holidays we are free from everyday worries and change certain habits and rules. But I want to remind everyone that such holiday food is not the last in our lives. Any product or dish that is on the table, we can buy, cook and eat at any time. The stomach of the average person is able to easily digest up to 500 g of food. If there is more – there will be heaviness in the stomach area, it becomes harder to breathe, and unbuckle the belt will not help. And I do not want to have fun, but go to sleep.
I would advise you to follow a few simple rules of eating for the New Year holidays.
Do not starve before sitting at the holiday table. Eat during the day, follow the regimen. Then you do not have to pounce on everything and eat a lot at once. This threatens overeating. Hunger in this situation is a bad companion. It will not allow us to make reasonable portions and enjoy festive meals. At the same time, the digestive system will be hit, it will be difficult for it to cope with such a large amount of food received at once.
If it is expected that the celebration will be long and there will be a lot of food, take breaks between meals for 3-4 hours, do not just sit at the table, waiting for the next meal, and move. So the probability of overeating decreases sharply.
Choose what to eat . For example, when adding your portion to one part of any meat or fish dish, take two parts of vegetables. If this is not possible and you are at a table where salads are only with mayonnaise, then determine for yourself the size of the portion that will fill your plate. And you don’t have to try everything on the table. This definitely leads to overeating.
I advise you to pay more attention not to the quantity of dishes, but to their quality . Let it not be a “basin” of Olivier but, for example, a salad with shrimp and fish baked in foil. Yes, we have a New Year’s tradition of eating Olivier. But you can eat his spoon. But can’t traditions be changed sometimes?
So get aesthetic pleasure from food. Eat slowly, savoring each piece , you are in no hurry. It also reduces the risk of overeating: after all, satiety from a portion of food comes in 15-20 minutes.
Drink water in between meals , because usually a lot of salt and fat comes with the holiday food. Your body will need fluids to maintain water-salt balance. It is advisable not to drink sweet drinks, they will only increase thirst. Drink plain water.
Be careful with alcohol . Alcohol slows down the hunger center and by itself is high in calories, especially strong and sweet. Prefer dry wine, which does not have many calories, and will promote better digestion.
As for sweet holiday desserts – it is better to leave them the next day for breakfast. Dessert in the morning will cause less trouble to your figure.
And I want to remind you again – in one day or night fat is not formed in kilograms . Indeed, after a few feasts the weight often increases by 2-3 kg. But do not despair: it is not 2-3 kg of fat. The most common cause of rapid weight gain is fluid retention. It lingers in the body because more than ever salty and sweet has been eaten. Also quickly gains weight, retaining water, alcohol.
Also take care of the movement . Especially if the holidays have a long weekend, there is a reason to get up from the couch and go for a walk. Instead of “getting stuck” at home in front of the TV.
I also recommend keeping a diary and writing down everything you eat during the day and physical activity. This will help you stick to your goal and understand – where you go, what you can give up. This will help you draw the right conclusions and change for the better!
Do not deny yourself the pleasure of sitting at a festive table with loved ones. After all, food in this case has a symbolic meaning, it becomes a means of communication. The main thing is to know the measure and remember what we celebrate, why we gathered at the festive table and remember – food is only a means, not the purpose of the holiday.
Indeed, in one evening, or even in a few days there will be no great harm to your figure, if you do not overeat and make your diet more thoughtful. Remember – after the holidays you will calmly become accustomed to, and I want to hope, a healthy thoughtful diet. The main gift for the holidays – health!
Congratulations!
