This week, Irish First Lady Sabina Higgins wrote a letter to the Irish Times criticizing a previous editorial on the Russian-Ukrainian war. In it, she noted that the fighting will continue until the world convinces Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky “to agree to a ceasefire and negotiations.”
Critics of the letter suggested that the first lady equated the actions of Russia and Ukraine with this letter, and senators from the parties of the coalition government of Ireland expressed concern.

“Ms. Higgins is entitled to her personal opinion and to her expression, although I believe that she is completely wrong in trying to see equivalence in the positions of Ukraine and Russia,” – said Senator Malcolm Byrne and added: “However, the decision to publish the letter on the president’s website causes serious questions. The President of Ireland must now make clear the strong support for the Ukrainian people from the people of Ireland and that we hold Russia responsible for war and barbarism.”
Sky News notes that the letter has been removed from the president’s website.
