In the historical part of the city of Uman, human remains were found near one of the hotels in the Hasidic pilgrimage area. It was in this neighborhood that Tzadik Nahman, the founder of Bratslav Hasidism, was buried. Based on the location of the remains, it clearly indicates that the builders excavated an ancient Jewish cemetery .

“For the first time, the construction workers came across human remains near this hotel in the spring, when they started digging a pit. However, the builders and the owner of the hotel did not report the find to the police, but took part of the remains together with the earth in an unknown direction,” Oleksiy, a Uman resident, said.
The new discovery of bones was found near the place where human remains were already found and which was reported in the press. A few months later, after rainy weather, the ground washed away, and the Hasidim noticed human bones.
The next day, about 20 Hasidim took shovels in their hands and began to dig in the place where they saw the bones. About 30 bones were collected in just a few hours.
“This area is an ancient Jewish cemetery. This is a holy place. You can’t build here at all!” – said one of the Hasids.

In 1810, Rabbi Nachman (1772-1810) from Bratslav (Breslaw), better known as Tzadik Nachman, was buried in the old Jewish cemetery. The Hasidim were persecuted by the Soviet authorities, especially in the 1930s. After the Second World War, the territory of the old Jewish cemetery was transferred for residential development. Nachman’s grave was under the foundation of one of the private houses.
It should be noted that the Hasidic pilgrimage area has historical significance and is recognized by the authorities. In 1994, by the decree of the President of Ukraine, the burial place of Rabbi Nachman received the status of a historical and cultural center.
The Hasidic community is confident that upon learning of the discovery of human remains, the Office of the President, regional and local authorities will intervene to ensure strict compliance with local and international laws regarding the preservation of cemeteries and the cessation of desecration.
