The Ukrainian Book Institute reported on the main results of its work in 2020.
Thus, last year 94 publishers were awarded institutional support grants totaling UAH 81.021 million. These funds were used to publish 2.551 million copies of 1306 titles of books, which, according to the institution, is 15% of the circulation and 11% of all titles published in 2020 in the Ukrainian language.
As part of the Translate Ukraine translation support program, UAH 4.680 million was allocated, for which 53 books with works by Ukrainian authors translated into 21 languages were published in 24 countries. This is 43% of the total number of translations of Ukrainian literature published in 2020 in other languages.
The program of replenishment of public library funds provided books to 606 libraries of Ukraine 380972 books from 79 publishers. The publications were purchased in the amount of UAH 47.378 million. 57 experts worked on determining the list of books.
Also, for the first time, an online catalog “Books on the Market” was created, which is available to librarians and publishers. Those interested will find there information about books available for sale. Currently, the catalog presents 3,200 titles of books submitted by publishers for purchase in 2020.
Last year, the Institute conducted or co-organized 19 projects and events to promote reading in Ukraine, reaching about 5 million people. Activities included 140 audio clips, 130 videos, 50 teaching materials for parents and teachers, posters, brochures, and professional events for librarians, and promotional online events.
The institution also organized online participation of Ukrainian publishers at three international book fairs: Frankfurt, Vilnius, and Bologna. In total, 39 publishing houses and litagents from Ukraine took part in the fairs, 135 business meetings were held, more than 300 titles of books were presented.
In 2020, the PEC conducted three large-scale studies of the book market and readership: “Reading in the context of media consumption and life design”, which allows for the first time to monitor the dynamics of reading in Ukraine, book market research in Ukraine: quantitative (conducted by the Book Institute) and Council, as well as “Reading in the context of media consumption: the impact of quarantine on the reading behavior of Ukrainians” by SML.
