US President Joe Biden believes his predecessor Donald Trump should not be allowed to attend intelligence briefings, which are usually held for former US leaders. The corresponding statement was made by the head of the White House in an interview with CBS, a fragment of which was broadcast on Friday night.
The presenter asked Biden if he thought the former American leader should have access to national intelligence briefings. “I don’t think so,” the Democrat said, explaining that he held that view because of Trump’s “unpredictable behavior.” However, Biden stressed that he “would not like to speculate on what to fear” if the Republican continues to receive intelligence.
“I just don’t think he needs to have access to these briefings. What is the value of holding these briefings for him? ” Biden wondered. At the same time, he confirmed the opinion he had repeatedly voiced during the election campaign that Trump was a danger. “I am sure of that,” said the American leader.
Shortly before Biden’s inauguration on Jan. 20, Ron Klein, the White House chief of staff, told CNN in an interview that the Democrat administration would consider giving Trump access to briefings. “We will, of course, review and follow the recommendations made by intelligence officers in the Biden administration and (Vice President Kamala) Harris after taking office,” Klein said at the time.
Former US presidents have traditionally had the right to request and receive the same intelligence briefings they conduct for their successors.
