Founded a year ago, the populist protest party “There is such a people”, a newcomer to the Bulgarian parliament and second in the election said it would not try to form a government.
As its leader, singer, and TV presenter Slava Trifonov wrote on Facebook, the party does not have enough deputies or partners to form a stable government, and it will not accept support from traditional parties, which it accuses of all the country’s troubles.
“The support we are offered is to support political groups that are harmful, greedy, and have proven their compromise. And it will not be supported, but dependence, ”he said.
Therefore, Trifonov wrote, former world chess champion Antoinette Stefanov, whom he nominated for the post of prime minister from his party, will immediately return the mandate to form a government to President Rumen Radev.
Prior to that, on April 23, the first populist conservative party, GERB, led by longtime Prime Minister Boyko Borisov, failed to form a government. The party has ruled Bulgaria alone or in coalitions since 2009 with a break in 2013-2014, but won only less than 26 percent of the vote in the current election and has lost its allies who did not make it to the current parliament.
The “There is such a people” party won 18 percent, gaining it in a wave of voter frustration with persistent corruption and poverty. In addition, two other similar parties have won the election.
Thus, according to the Bulgarian Constitution, there is a third and final attempt to form a government, and its analysts consider it unrealistic. In the event of a failure and a third attempt, the president must call new elections within two months.
